Kendun Recorders — Burbank, 1971–1980s
Kent Duncan opened Kendun Recorders in Burbank in the early '70s and built it into one of the most important mastering and mixing rooms on the West Coast. Through the disco and R&B era, the studio's mastering chain became part of the sound itself — the final stage where countless soul, funk, and dance records got their shine before pressing.
While Hollywood and the Valley had bigger names with bigger marquees, Kendun was the technical room — the one engineers and producers trusted to finish the work. The disco 12-inch era ran heavily through this building. Quincy Jones and the Brothers Johnson productions, Casablanca-era dance records, and a steady stream of A-list soul and pop sessions came through.
The room closed in the '80s as the industry shifted, but the run that Kendun had — roughly 1972 through the mid-80s — lines up almost exactly with the peak of West Coast soul and disco mastering. The records are still in heavy rotation. The name Kendun is on the back of more sleeves than most people realize.
